Six Tips for Getting Your Book Published

  1. Pick a date you want to hold the first copy of your book - Choose an important day like your 50th birthday; your wedding anniversary or a day that coincides with a life event like a speaking engagement. It will give you a tangible goal to reach for and keep you motivated.
  2. Schedule the best time/place for writing productively everyday - Pay attention to the time and place that allows you to do your most productive writing. One author found that he worked best in the morning; stating that he could get more done in the hour between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. then he could in the three hours between 2 and 5 p.m.
  3. Set a schedule that will allow you to hit your target date - Block off that time when you are most productive, as YOUR time for writing, and stick to it. Writing should become another part of your daily routine, like exercising or eating breakfast.
  4. Find someone who will hold you accountable for finishing your book - Whether it's a friend, a family member or a fellow author, this person will become invaluable for keeping you on track toward completing your manuscript. A firm but gentle hand can make all the difference.
  5. Develop a promotional and marketing plan for your completed book - Writing a great book is only half the job - making sure readers know about it is equally important. That's why planning to promote the book even before it is finished can serve as another source of motivation.
  6. Celebrate the completion of your book with an event or party - For most authors, writing and publishing a book is one of the greatest accomplishments of their lives. Celebrate this feat. Throw a launch party for friends and family. Give out copies of your book to those who've helped you along the way. Enjoy this moment, as you are now a published author!
